We're all going to the zoo, zoo, zoo...

Our current unit of study has the very catchy title of 'Feathers, Fins and Fur'. As you will have guessed from this title and the activity in Student Led Conference we are learning all about animals. This is a very exciting topic in K2 and we have many experts who have so many things to share. So we began the unit by thinking about our favourite animals.

We also shared what we already knew about animals. Here are some thoughts from the children:
Elena: Giraffes have brown spots.
Maira: Animals have fur.
Nick: Animals have tails

Our first ideas showed we were thinking a lot about what an animal looks like. But Ava talked about where an animal lives and that was the next direction we went in. During 'Discovery Time' the children could make different habitats and share ideas.
Victoria: I decided to put in trees for the giraffe because giraffe eat leaves.

Maira: It is a good home because it has lots of water and food.

The children are exploring what an animal needs to survive.

We have been doing so much reading about animals from fiction mainly focusing on Eric Carle to non fiction. So today we had another opportunity to show what we have learnt. Manuel learnt that cheetahs can only run for 30 seconds. Hugo learnt that koalas live in Australia and hang out in trees just like sloths. Lots of children talked about the features of animals such as hedgehog spikes (Diya) and cat claws (Annabelle), which leads us very smoothly onto our Zoo trip.
On Wednesday when we visit the zoo we will be observing the animals and looking at their features. We will be thinking about how those features help them to survive.

Thank you to those parents who volunteered for the trip. Please can all the volunteers come to the class at 8:00 am on Wednesday so we can go through the morning with you.
