Addition and Subtraction

Over the last two weeks the children have been busily honing their additions and subtractions skills. We have been learning that there are many ways to solve a problem.

This chart reminds us that if we are not sure how to solve an answer one way there are other choices. Why don't you ask your child which strategy they use to solve problems?

The children have been getting to know numbers in more depth by splitting them up into parts and putting them back together again using coins.  Here is Ryan's example.

Your child's example will appear in the Learning Journal next week.
We have practiced knowing number facts quickly by playing lots of card games. Last week in Maths Workshop we played a memory game where the children had to remember where the pairs were to make ten. Today in Maths Workshop they had to play a patience style game to match the pairs to ten. The children are getting speedy now at knowing these facts.
Playing number bond patience.
Dice are always useful in Maths activities. In both last weeks Maths Workshop and this weeks we used them to help create numbers for adding and taking away.

Phew these Maths lessons are very busy, but lots of fun!
