Playing with Power Words

Last week I introduced you to our Reading Superheroes.

Now it's time to be introduced to the POWER WORDS!!!

These are high frequency words that your child will see throughout their books. One of the reading superpowers is being able to quickly recognise the ‘Power words.’ So it would be really helpful (and fun) to practise these words with your child. They might already know some of them on the sheet and those words are a good place to start as it can build some confidence.

Games to play with the ‘Power words’

Concentration:
1. Cut up the sheet, turn them face down, turn over and say them. If you get it right you can keep the card. If not turn it back face down.
2. Make another copy of the words and play snap or a memory game.
Word Trail: Put the words on the floor and make a trail with them.  If the child reads the word correctly they move forward a step, if they don't, tell them and they move back a step. The aim is to get to the end of the trail.
BINGO: Draw a grid 4 by 4 squares, and write a word in each square. Have your child draw word cards from a bag and match them to the words on the grid, saying the words as they match them up.
Word Detective:  Lay four to six words on a line. Have your child read out each word. Your child, the ‘detective’, turns away while you ‘steal’ a word. The ‘detective’ must say what the word is.

We will listen to the children reading their words and when they have instant recall I will give them the next set of words.

Happy Reading!
